Changing Dynamics of Kannada Television

The complete sphere of television is undergoing a revolution!
The TAM Rating System has now been replaced by the Broadcasters Audience Research Council (BARC) Rating System. Shows on all channels are improving in terms of quality and presentation. Channels are game to portray up-market luxuries in every aspect of their show making. New content is entering market every single day for the entertainment of the audiences!

And, the Kannada Television is also undergoing a drastic change in order to cope up with the changing dynamics of the industry and the demand of the audiences for better content!

The Leader of the Market - Colors Kannada

"ETv Kannada eega Colors Kannada"!
"Onde Sambandha ade Anubandha"!

Colors Kannada
ETv Kannada
This channel underwent magnificent transition from ETv Kannada to Colors Kannada marking the change of ownership to Network 18. And ever since the official launch of Colors Kannada, through the show, 'Color Color' it has always stayed on the top of BARC Ratings, be it in terms of Reality Shows, Fiction or the ratings of the channel on the whole. Ranging from telecast of extremely successful reality shows like Super Minute, Maja Talkies, Dancing Stars and the recently launched Bigg Boss to famous fictional shows like Agni Saakshi, Ashwini Nakshatra and Lakshmi Baramma, Colors Kannada has undauntedly stayed on the top of the table. Credit goes to the Programming and Business Head of Colors Kannada and a man of indomitable spirit, Parameshwar Gundkal. Ever since the change of ownership (which lead to the recruitment of Parameshwar Gundkal), the channel has zestfully presented new content to its viewers without compromising on the quality of any show under the leadership of this man. 'Anubandha Awards', an award ceremony exclusively for the members of the Colors Kannada Fraternity is one of the grandest celebrations of Bonding and Care of the family and something which all classes of audience look out for. With the recent launch of the third edition of Bigg Boss Kannada, the channel is certain about achieving greater heights and ratings.

Zee Kannada stiffening up to reach Position 1!

Zee Kannada - New Logo
Zee Kannada - Old Logo
Zee Kannada initiated their adaptation to the latest trend with the change in the colour combination of the logo of the channel. They also launched new shows such as 'Maharshivaani' and 'Weekend with Ramesh'. Ever since then, Zee Kannada has started leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of its viewers every time they tune onto it! With the launch of shows like 'Life Super Guru' and 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs', the channel has gotten more closer to the audiences. Award ceremonies such as 'Zee Music Awards' have been successful in getting the channel more audiences. With regard to elements of fiction, the channel is progressively getting stronger. The channel has been successful in roping in directors of successful daily soaps, such as Vinu Balanja, Arooru Jagdeesh and others. It won't be of much surprise if this channel reached Position 1 in a few months. The mastermind behind this change is unequivocally its Deputy Business Head and Programming Head, Raghavendra Hunsur. The channel has been gaining new dimensions ever since his recruitment. We will have to keep a watch on Zee Kannada to know what more they have in store for their audiences.

Attempt to regain position - Udaya

Udaya Tv
The TAM Report was based on televisions skewed towards Heartland India while we represent high-end and deep-end viewership. Udaya which remained on the top of all TAM Reports, swiftly dropped to the forth position on changing the rating system to BARC. It was absolutely necessary for Udaya to stand up, brush its knees and change its content to be positioned better on the BARC Ratings. There began the journey of Udaya towards content closer to the viewers. The channel has been continually trying to provide variety to its audience. The channel attains exceptionally high ratings while showcasing Blockbuster movies for the first time on television. Such spurts initially provided respite to the channel. Later, they realized that these unpredictable ratings were not enough and that they had to have a consistent weekly show to rely upon for their ratings. There started the exploration of Udaya for unexplored concepts in Fiction. Currently, they have new shows of fiction such as Moggina Manasu and Madumagalu. They also use new marketing strategies to attract more audiences towards themselves and their shows. Yet, they will have to undoubtedly strive more harder to get to the top of the table.

Kannada Television is silently adapting itself to the latest trend and all channels have begun to persuade more audiences for better positioning on the ratings table. But at the end of every year, there can only be one channel on the top of that table. And that channel would be the one which delivers the best content to its audiences and keeps them entertained at the same time. All channels are designing new strategies to rope in greater percentage of viewership. But, whose strategy will work? Who will get to the top of the BARC Table this year? We will have to wait to discover the answer!

ETv Kannada has become a top-grossing channel ever since Bigg Boss went on to be regional. Though the introduction of Bigg Boss is Kannada, with a man of love, Kiccha Sudeep as its host, has been stated as the most prominent reason for the booming TRPs of ETv Kannada, one man has remained consistent all through the channels successes - Bigg Boss, Indian, and the now showing Comedy Circus and Dancing Stars - A man of millions and apparently a man with millions - Raghavendra Hunsur.

It was a time when Suvarna channel was shining high with reality shows such as Pyate Mandi Kaadig Bandru, Halli Haida Pyateg Banda, Hosa Love Story, Maja with Sruja, Star Singer, Nodi Swami Naav Irode Heege and tonnes more of them. It suddenly drifted from all these so called filthy reality shows and started a new phase in the history of Kannada Television - Introduction of Kannadada Kotyadhipati in regional industry. Raghavendra Hunsur was the man behind all this transition. He remained in the channel all through its success even in the first edition of Kannadada Kotyadhipati. The time slot of 8:00pm to 9:00pm was now extended to 8:00pm to 9:30pm exclusively for reality shows. After the end of the first edition of Kannadada Kotyadhipati, replacing this slot with another reality show of the previous kind, meant bad reports about of the channel. So, this time slot that was primarily ruled by reality shows then, was now the cake of daily soaps. Suvarna introduced three new serials for that time slot. It was a time slot when all the new all ideas of Raghavendra Hunsur was actually brought into practicality and executed. But, now he was chained down from trying anything new things for his slot. He had to do nothing for that slot, but sit and watch the daily soaps. This is assumed to be the reason for the change of his interest from Suvarna to ETv Kannada whose ownership had just then changed.

Raghavendra Hunsur entered ETv Kannada. He did not go unarmed. He took along with him, a man who had then brought a lot of fame to Suvarna by anchoring all the shows executed by him, Akul Balaji. The duo started a new show on ETv, Mane Munde Mahalakshmi which was a big blow to the TRP of Suvarna. Later on, came the introduction of Bigg Boss to regional India which was a Bigger blow to the TRP of Suvarna which was then showing the second season of Kannadada Kotyadhipati in the same time slot. According to reports, Bigg Boss did much better than Kannadada Kotyadhipati in all respects. Later the introduction of 'Indian' reality show which was also headed by Raghavendra Hunsur proved to be the troughs of TRP for Suvarna. And the now showing Dancing Stars is said to be doing much better than the reality show in Suvarna which is showing at 9:00pm, Star Singer and the shows of all other channels as well.

Raghavendra Hunsur

Raghavendra Hunsur is a Kannaadiga who hails from Mysore. He was born on October 15, 1985. He finished his schooling in St.Joseph High School, Hunsur and graduated for the Mysore University. He worked at Suvarna as Executive Producer from 2006 to 2008. He continued work there as the head of Non-Fiction from 2009 to 2012. On October 12, 2012, he started working as the Head of Non-Fiction in ETv Kannada and has continued work till date.

KannadaTelevision blogspot wishes him all the best for all his future endeavors!!

Naane Rajkumari was a show that entered Kasturi channel when the entire TRP of the channel was down and the channel wanted to have a complete makeover. Among the very few shows which were liked by the people when it took a makeover, Naane Rajkumari was one. Ashitha is doing an extremely great job as its anchor though the viewers feel she is yelling at times. The rounds seem to be good unless there are non-dancer contestants in the show as many rounds are dance-oriented. The segment of this show which caught the eyes of most people is the show-down, 'Inti Nimmavalu'. This show-down segment is loved by most viewers which has inspired the channel to donate one time slot completely for this in the form of 'Mouna Maatadaga'. For all the funny rounds and the very serious farewell 'Inti Nimmavalu', this show is ranked 5th in this list.

Many years after the end of their first musical show which was a huge hit in the history of Kannada Television Antyakshari, Udaya channel has once again stepped out to create another musical hit, Udaya Singer. The main aim of this show is the create a platform for the tiny tots to exhibit their singing talent. The judges of this show are music maestro Vijay Prakash and the bubbly actress Aindrita Ray. Set apart from other singing competitions, this show has a versatile singer, Gurukiran as a trainee for the children. Moreover, every week, various people from Kannada Cinema  come and encourage the children. The anchor of this show, Chitra is also doing an extremely good job. Yet the channel is still being questioned about the choice of Aindrita as a judge as she has no musical background. Yet, her words of appreciation fills zeal and confidence in the children. For such a wonderful show being show up on Udaya after a series of flop reality shows, this show is ranked 4th in this list.

Suvarna Super Jodi is a unique game show in which lead pairs of the fiction shows in Suvarna come together as contestants. They perform a variety of tasks given to them in their quest to claim the title 'Suvarna Super Jodi'. This is an entirely new concept put forth by Suvarna Channel. The 'atte' and 'mava' of this show, Mrs. and Mr. Sahi Kahi Chandru are doing as excellent job as judges. This show is doing well in the TRP Ratings as well. The anchors of this show, though they always try to be in unison, fail at times which is the ONLY seen drawback of this show. Else, this is a perfect concept to innovate with and hence this show is ranked 3rd in this list for its excellent concept, games and entertainment.

Kannadada Kotyadhipati is a show meant for the common men. Kannadada Kotyadhipati is the biggest ever reality show on Kannada Television offering the biggest prize money of Rs.1,00,00,000/- (Rupees One Crore) in the Kannada GEC space. The format and the rules for this edition of Kannadada Kotyadhipati will be sameas the first edition of KBC. Kannadada Kotyadhipati is anchored by the face of Kannada cinema - youth icon and power star- Puneeth Rajkumar who comes from the first family of Kannada cinema. Though the second season of this show had a great start, the show started to look down after a few episodes. The game did not appear to be as entertaining as the first season. The main cause for this may be the lack of fun-filled dialogues. It was reportedly said that Guruprasad is the man behind all the dialogues of Puneeth in the first season. His absence from the show in this season may be the reason for the lack of powerful dialogues. Yet, after a few weeks, the show picked up its TRP and hence it became a huge hit in Kannada Television again. Viewers are still not satisfied with the show as they have set a much better standard to themselves last year. The celebrity episodes which have already featured Malashree, Prabhudeva, Upendra, Radhika Pandit, Ramya, Jaggesh, Priyamani and many more actors have continued to help the show gain more TRP once in a while. In spite of the all the short comings, this show is ranked 2nd in this list.

Bigg Boss is the south Indian version of the reality TV programme Bigg Boss broadcast in India. It follows the Big Brother format, which was first developed by Endemol. It came to air in the Kannada area of India after the success of Bigg Boss airing in the Hindi speaking part of India.
Karnataka is the Only State in the world to have a Big Brother Format as many other formats have only Country Wise Formats as it is an Achievement For Karnataka State and Kannada Language to have a Big Brother Format called Bigg Boss. Being compered by the Abhinaya Chakravarthi of Kannada Cinema, Sudeep, the show is doing extremely good. Though the show has the number of people who like this and hate it at par, this show has gained a highest TRP in the history of ETV Kannada channel. The show becomes the most interesting on Fridays and Saturdays when Sudeep takes over the television screen of all the homes and talks to the Bigg Boss Homemates and the eliminated conterstents. Though critics say that this is a fake show, not a single evidence, till date has been put forth to prove it. For everything that is a part of this show, and most notably the invaluable entertainment that it has given its audience, Bigg Boss is Topping This List!!!

Preetiyinda Title Song

Preethiyinda / Preetiyinda Serial Title Song
Main Song in the voice of Chinmaya M. Rao

Tuesday, 6 November 2012

Amruthavarshini is a story which revolves around a soft and conservative girl Amrutha, who gets married to a member of the rich Desai Family Vijay, and adapts herself to the situation as time proceeds. Her sister Varsha, who is also married to another member of the Desai Family and her step mother are always trying to pull her down while mother-in law Shakuntala, supports her stay in the family. Most of the action in this story takes place in the kitchen which looks very unrealistic. Moreover, Ravi R Garani who is the creator of his serial does not make is as humorous as his other serials. Even though Amrutha is constantly 'bullied' by her step-mother and sister, she still believes that they are right and dances according to their tune. She never back-answers to them. This also adds to the unrealistic part of the plot. With all these short-comings, Hema Chaudhary and other cast play and excellent role in this soap.

For all the action that is taking place in the kitchen of Desai Family, the serial is ranked FIFTH in the list.

In a pilgrimage town of Madhurapura near Mysore, lives Radhika a sweet and dedicated young daughter of Poornachandra Shastry and Devaki. Radhika was found abandoned as an infant in the temple managed by Poornachandra Shastry. Adopted and raised as a daughter, she is a homely, dutiful and hardworking girl. The biological daughter of Poornachandra Shastry is Vishaka, a happy-go-lucky girl aspiring to make it big as an actress in the Kannada film industry.

The Bharadwajas are a known name in Madhurapura. Jhanvi’s (the daughter-in-law) jealousy and hatred for the family comes from this discomfort of being childless. The hopes of the family now lie upon the younger son Vishal.

Vishal is lured to visit Govardhangiri by his family, in the hope of finding him a bride in the holy pilgrimage town. Vishal comes to Madhurapura from London and falls in love with Radhika at the very first sight. His feelings are reinforced after he sees her on several other occasions. Radhika, at her end, feels the same love for Vishal, but refuses to accept it herself. Vishal’s search for Radhika’s identity ends with a switch of identity where he is told that the girl he is in love with is Vishaka.

Resolving this dilemma, Vishal has moved on to marry Radhika (for the second time) which is initially opposed by Vishal's mother. This serial has a great plot. The cast, especially Chandan Kumar is playing a great role in the soap. But, the drawback lies in the fact that a lot of stress is laid in this serial to the customs of the Hindu society, which looks North- Indian rather than South-Indian. This clearly shows that this is a remake of a Hindi serial.

For all the pain taken by the director and the producer to emphasize the real phase of Hindu Religion, this serial is ranked FORTH in this list.

Joint families are slowly becoming a thing of the past. The women folk in the family are always blamed for being the catalyst for disintegrating a united family. This is a story which came as a revolutionizing factor for this concept. Sose Tanda Sowbhagya is a story that revolves around two women, Keerthi (Gayithri) who is trying to keep her mother's brother's family united and Anjali, who is hell bent upon dividing the family. Anjali enters the family as Gayithri, and marries Keshava and grabs the sympathy of the family by misusing their innocence. Keerti enters the family marrying Raghava. None of the family members support their marriage. Yet, both take over their family and live successfully in the same house. The exact story of this soap has just begun as Gayithri and Anjali have just started to challenge each other. This story is yet to take very interesting turns and twists.

For this story which has just begun, rank THREE holds good.

Mukta Mukta is a political story and the action takes place in the state of Rudranchala. This story revolves around a family where only a lady, Shambhavi is working and all others are unemployed or are still completing their education. Gradually the economical condition of the family improves. But very soon members of the family find themselves behind the bars due to various reasons. Keeping the family aside, the story also revolves around complications of the relationship between Neviditha and Devanand, who is the son of ex-chief minister of the state. A lot of characters enter the plot as time proceeds. Mrinalini and Sidhanth the wards of famous political leaders of the state Binga and Shiva Krisha Desai marry against the wishes of their parents and soon find their relationship straining due to the effect of politics. A lot of twists take place in the story henceforth, with most of the lead roles taking part in the elections of the state

The family of Shambhavi around whom the story first revolved is now, not to be seen. This is one of the drawbacks of the plot.

For the successful political scenario set up by the director, T.N. Seetharam and for the excellent court scenes, this serial is ranked TWO.

Preetiyinda is the story of two sisters Neela and Pachche out of whom Neela is dark skinned and Pachche is fair complexioned. Their skin color defines the course of their life and the relationships that they subsequently enter into, forms the crux of this drama. This show brings to the fore, one of the biggest societal black spots in our country that influences judgments and prejudices based on skin color. Right from childhood, Pachche gets all attention of family and society as she is fair skinned and perceived as pretty versus Neela who is sidelined due to the color of her skin.

This is a story of the bond between two sisters and the sacrifices they make for each other, specially Pachcche who gets married to a mentally challenged person Amay on the condition that Amay's mother agrees to marry her second son to Neela who was not getting any good marriage proposals due to the color of her skin. After a lot of 'hungama' in the plot, Neela enters into a wed-lock with Thejas Sahukar. Now the story currently deals with the dark secret behind Amay's madness.

Everything in this daily soap is extremely good. Starting from the shooting location till the cast and crew, everything is simply 'superb'. The story takes very interesting turns throughout the plot which adds to the crunch of the story. Hats off to the director of this soap, Ashok Kashyap.

For everything that's a part of this soap, this is ranked ONE in this list.
